Qatar enters SICA as Extra Regional Observer

Placencia, Belize, December 16, 2014: The Secretary General of the Central American Integration System (SICA), Dr. Victoria Marina Velásquez de Avilés, and Ambassador of the State of Qatar, Mr. Abdulrahman Mohamed H. Al-Doussari, formalized the adhesion of the Asian country as Extra Regional Observer of SICA. The Signing of the agreement had as honorary witness the Foreign Minister of Belize, Mr. Wilfred Elrington, representing the Presidency Pro Tempore of the system.

Dr. Aviles said the signing of this agreement will facilitate the strengthening of relations of friendship and cooperation between Qatar and the regional body. For his part, Ambassador Al-Doussari expressed the interest of his country to support the Central American integration process.

In its capacity as Extra Regional Observer, the State of Qatar will participate in the Meeting of Presidents and the Council of Ministers on various issues, especially those related to integration and cooperation for sustainable economic, technological, scientific, environmental, and human development in the region, among others.

The interest of Qatar to participate as observer was welcomed by the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of SICA, during the regular meeting in Panama on December 14, 2013, so it instructed the General Secretariat to perform the necessary arrangements and formalize such admission.
