Political Constitution of the Republic of El Salvador of
2000 with reforms in 1983-2000

The Constitution of January 1962 established a republican, democratic and representative regime but in 1979, a Civil-Military Board took over and most constitutional rights were suspended.

The Constitutional Assembly was elected in March 1982 and a new Constitution came into force on December 20, 1983.

During the 1990s, the Constitution when through significant reforms as a consequence of the pacification and democratization process.


Political Parties
There are nine representative political parties:

  • National Republican Alliance (Alianza Republicana Nacionalista - ARENA).
  • Democratic Convergence (Convergencia Democrática - CD).
  • Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (Frente Farabundo Martí para Liberación Nacional - FMLN).
  • National Action Party (Partido de Acción Nacional - PAN).
  • National Conciliation Party (Partido de Conciliación Nacional - PCN).
  • Christian-Democrat Party (Partido Demócrata-Cristiano - PDC).
  • Social – Christian Union (Unión Social Cristiana - USC).
  • United Democratic Center (Centro Democrático Unido - CDU).
  • Democrat Party (Partido Demócrata -PD).
