Republic of China

Government and Administration

Taiwan is governed according to the Constitution adopted in 1947 and amended on a later date.

The island has a political system which although in the practice shows all the structures characteristic of a sovereign state, it formally constitutes another province of China . Moreover, neither the nationalist government of the island heir to the former government of all of China up to its relocation to Taiwan in 1949, nor the People's Republic of China have recognized their mutual existence. As a consequence, two levels have existed in the governmental structure of Taiwan for many years: the actual administration in continental China prior to 1949 which was relocated to the island and the administration developed in Taiwan from that date; the first of them formally prevailed over the second up to the 1990s.
