Many old China holidays and traditions are still observed in Taiwan. The family is still the fundamental element of the society and compassion remains as a traditional value. Old celebrations such as the Dragon Boat Festival, the Autumn Festival and the Lantern Festival are of great importance.

Linguistically, the island of Taiwan is considered the cradle of the Malayan-Polynesian languages since the four groups in which they are divided are present on the island and one of them is the origin of the rest of languages which are spoken in Madagascar, Indonesia, Philippines and Polynesia.
