Solar Energy

Solar energy is a clean source of energy using photovoltaic and/or thermal technologies, which transform the sun's radiation into energy to generate electricity or heat; reducing the consumption of conventional energy, helping to preserve the environment, promoting the sustainable development and the use of renewable resources in satisfying the regional energy needs.

Among the main solar energy projects that the EEP has supported at the regional level, there are electrification projects specifically in isolated rural communities and islands, either for lighting and/or water pumping; as well for productive activities: dehydrated fruit, irrigation, cooling systems, among others. These projects had improved the quality of life of the beneficiaries, enabling them to improve the conditions for the children’s education, the creation of small businesses and giving them entertainment possibilities. This has been done through the provision of equipment, feasibility studies and other tools for different rural cooperatives, private sector companies and NGOs, among others; which received seed money to encourage the development of the solar energy, in order to demonstrate the environmental and economic benefits of these technologies. The applications supported by the Partnership have been very successful and have already completed their technical and economic evaluations, proving a win-win situation for those involved in the implementation of these projects.

In some poor rural communities, the EEP found the necessity to look for a strong partner to support and guide the actions required for the sustainability of the project after its execution, e.g. a NGOs or other altruistic institutions that help people in the sites.
