EEP´s Clean Energy Project Benefits over 500 Families in Waslala, Nicaragua

With great optimism and joy, families of the Kubalí remote village of Waslala, Nicaragua, inaugurated on July 5th, 2012, the small hydropower plant “La Florida” which was possible thanks to the support of the Swiss Development cooperation with Central America, the Government of Nicaragua, the World Bank, the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SG-SICA) through the Energy and Environment Partnership with Central America (EEP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

"This Small Hydroelectric Plant will generate 300 kilowatts, which will ensure rural electrification to 533 households where live 2,415 people. In order to accomplish this project, it had to be constructed 31 miles of electric grid, so our country continues with the poverty alleviation, the security that these will improve the Nicaraguans quality of life" said Mr. Donald Espinoza, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), in his inauguration speech.

The total cost of the project was US$ 2,600,000 and was invested in feasibility and design studies, electromechanical and electrical works, sustainable management of the micro watershed and the formation of a local environmental protection organization, for the direct benefit of an estimated of 3,000 people from the rural communities: Kubalí, La Limonera, La Esperanza, Zinica, Kusulí, El Guabo, Las Lajas and Las Jaguas.

The EEP supports these projects with seed money from the cooperation of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, the Austrian Development Cooperation and the European Union.

The inauguration ceremony was chaired by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Nicaragua (MEM), Mr. Donald Espinoza; the Mayor of Waslala, Mr. Leonel Urbina; the CEO of ENATREL, Mr. Salvador Mansell; the Swiss Ambassador to Central America, Mr. Hans Rudolf Hodel; the EEP´s Regional Coordinator Mr. Salvador Rivas and the UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Nicaragua, Mr. Benigno Rodríguez.
